Scribbles of Hope:
A Guide to Prayer Journaling
Amid Life's Hardest Seasons
During one particularly challenging season, I realized adaptability's power in my spiritual practices. My days were filled with uncertainty, and what once provided comfort seemed daunting. As I sat with my prayer journal one night, feeling overwhelmed, I saw some notes written on a lesson in which Pastor Rick Warren said, "Never let the things you don't know keep you from obeying the things you do know."
That's when it struck me that perhaps it wasn't the practice that needed changing but my approach to it.
As much as I hated it, I had to embrace flexibility: Seasons of change demand flexibility. I hade to practice what I preached to my short-term missions group! (ugh) But you ... adjusting your prayer journaling routine to meet the moment's challenges allows you to stay spiritually connected. As spiritual leader Joyce Meyer suggests, "Let God have your life; He can do more with it than you can." This reminder means remaining open to changes in your routine to align with God's guidance.
Simplify Your Approach: During stressful times, simplify journaling to focus on critical elements like gratitude and guidance. As Matthew 11:28-30 reminds us, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Let the simplicity of your journal return you to rest in God's promises.
Lean Into Scripture: Scripture offers a steadfast source of strength. Incorporate verses that resonate with your journey. Romans 15:13, for instance, speaks of hope and peace, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him." Use these words to guide your entries and sustain you.
Journal Your Emotions: Your prayer journal is a sacred space for honest emotional expression. Richard Foster, a renowned Christian theologian, emphasizes bringing our whole selves before God. Journaling emotions can lead to healing, as expressed in Psalm 34:17-18, "The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles."
Practice Self-Compassion: We often hold ourselves to high standards. This season, extend grace to yourself. Ongoing spiritual growth is not linear, and missing a day does not equate to failure. Dr Brené Brown, a famous author on vulnerability, advises, "Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love."
Seek Community and Support: Surround yourself with a community that uplifts you. Connection with others can provide the needed strength. Sites like Crosswalk offer forums for community prayer and encouragement. Let others journey with you when the path gets tough.
Look for Signs of Hope: In times of difficulty, hope can often be hidden yet present—record moments of gratitude and recognition of God's presence. Henri Nouwen writes, "Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day."
As I look back at that challenging time, I realize that my adaptability in prayer journaling was as relevant as the practice itself. I found a steady guide amid turmoil by embracing flexibility, seeking simplicity, and anchoring in scripture. Remember, dear friend, God's presence is unwavering no matter how fierce the storm. May your prayer journal be a testament to His enduring faithfulness and a beacon of hope as you navigate life's ever-changing seasons.
